Rotary cutter

Definition: A rotary cutter uses a circular blade to roll along fabric, slicing it as it goes. A rubber or plastic mat is placed underneath the fabric to prevent damage to your workspace. These mats usually come marked with inches to make your work easier. Rotary cutters are handy in place of scissors when you have a lot of curves or a set pattern to cut out on a flat piece of fabric.

Rotary cutters have a safety latch that sets the blade within a plastic holster when it is not in use. Rotary blades are typically much sharper than your average pair of scissors, so be careful! These blades are easily replaceable when they become dull. Rotary cutters can be found at craft outlets, and can be bought in a price range anywhere from cheap to very expensive.
