Iron and Ironing Board

By Lorain Blanken, About.com

steam iron

A leak-proof steam iron.

Definition: Irons are used for flattening the wrinkles out of clothing, and pressing seams. They can be used to bond iron-on patches and fusing to material. The iron is an ancient tool, first appearing in 1st Century B.C. China. Back then they were still made of cast iron, hence the name, 'iron'. Through the ages, irons have been heated on massive stoves, but these days we have the electric steam variety.

The sleek models today can blast steam, are leak-proof, and come with a variety of safety features. Caution: It is very easy to burn yourself while using an iron. Be very aware of what you are doing at all times when using an iron. Irons can be bought in a variety of price ranges at many department stores, depending on what features you want.

This item is one of a few basic DIY fashion tools that you should have on hand.

If you have any questions on how to use or where to find electric irons, visit your DIY Fashion Message Board. We love to answer questions and help with any issues.
