One way to make button holes without sewing is to use a grommet punch. Simply apply the grommets 2" from the top of the shirt.
For button holes, start 1 1/2" from the top of the shirt. Make 3/4" chalk marks about an inch apart. Use the buttonhole setting on your sewing machine to complete the button holes. Otherwise, use the buttonhole stitch as show above to hand sew the holes.
You can place your button holes at the front, back or side of the shirt. Decide where you want the bow to be when it is tied.
After you have created the buttonholes, turn the shirt inside-out. Fold over the top of the shirt so that it overlaps the buttonholes by at least 1/4". Stitch 1/4" from the edge of the fold, creating a tube for the drawstring to be pulled through.
Next, we will finish up the tube top.
