Through frequent washings, a patch like this will fray. To prevent it from fraying, you need to use a tight zigzag stitch along the edges. Above is an example of zigzag stitch settings on a sewing machine. You will want to use the setting that makes the threads lay right next to each other. You can zigzag stitch by hand, but a sewing machine offers much faster and durable results. This is also known as a satin stitch when the zigzags are so close together.
Tips:
- This simple heart patch is a great introduction to applique, where pictures are made from patches. Visit the applique gallery for more patchy inspiration.
- Try a group of different sized patches. For example, you could make it look like stars are sprinkled down the leg of the pants.
