How-to Spring Fashion 2010

Save money and make the hottest Spring fashion yourself.

By , About.com Guide

During Fashion Week back in September, we were getting the big preview of the hottest Spring styles for 2010. Maybe you're no Marc Jacobs, but I bet you can pull off these styles without massive sewing skills or a massive budget.

1. Steal the Drapes

For evening engagements, we're seeing a lot of thin and sheer fabric that has been manipulated into wrapped and sweeping drapery. There are wrinkles and tucks of fabric in every direction.

2. Cropped Pants

This Spring, pants are coming up short, from casual Capri's to suit separates. Fortunately, it's easy for you to give your trousers the trim. I'll show you how to do a bit of hemming to get the short pant look.

3. The Scarves Still Have it

Skinny scarves in lightweight fabrics are still happening as a must-have style accessory. Transition from thick scarves to thin as the weather warms up.

4. Put Some Swing in that Thing

While evening wear this Spring is long and flowing, daytime skirts and dresses will be cut above the knee for a playful look. Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and Rebecca Taylor and Dennis Basso were all showing off their versions of swishy skirts with flirty movement.

6. Vacation Khaki Tones

At Fashion Week in New York, Elie Tahari and Generra were among designers showing off their creamy collections. If you aren't into the stark raving bold colors being offered up this season, one option is to head the other directions for neutral khaki, sage and denim blue tones.

You can dye your own light browns with coffee, or use a commercial cold water dye to easily make those faded blue and green hues. Pair with a striped shirt or suede hat.

7. Oversized Cardigans

Sometimes it takes a while for Spring to warm up, so let's all indulge in a little cardigan trend. Pull those bold cardigans out of the closet, or knit and crochet up your own striped piece.
