I am all in favor of the ruler, but measuring tape goes where no ruler has ever gone before! With measuring tape you can get around the curves and corners of your clothes while working. It is also handy to take in your pocket to the thrift store so that you can measure lengths that may not be disclosed on the label.

Be sure to wind up your measuring tape when you are done with it, because many plastic versions can stretch or break with rough use. Measuring tape is fairly cheap and can be found at most and grocery or department stores. See more information on measuring tape.
