If your oven mitts are clean, you can wear them while shaping your bowl instead of risking a burn. I recommend this when doing this project with children. Even if the bowl isn't hot, you don't want to teach them to touch anything straight out of the oven!
The bowl will cool completely in about 10 seconds. You don't have very long to shape it. If you mess up, just reheat it for a few more minutes and try again.
I used a large casserole dish for my first try and it came out looking like a star-shaped tray. I molded the points of the star a little, but otherwise left it as it came out.
