How to Make Your Own Luna Lovegood Spectrespecs

Luna Lovegood from "Harry Potter" wearing spectrespecs

Warner Bros. Pictures

Project Overview
  • Total Time: 1 hr
  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Estimated Cost: $5

Luna Lovegood is a fan-favorite character in the "Harry Potter" series. She's quirky and unique with a flair that's all her own. While she's a compassionate friend and a smart witch, Luna also is known for her whimsical attire. This includes her spectrespecs, glasses that make "wrackspurts" (invisible brain-boggling creatures) visible to the naked eye. Making spectrespecs just like Luna's for a party or Halloween costume is simple and requires little more than a printable template, scissors, and plastic wrap. This project uses the template from Cut Out + Keep.

What You'll Need

Equipment / Tools

  • Computer and printer
  • Scissors
  • Coloring tools for decorating
  • Rubber cement or glue
  • Book or other heavy object

Materials

  • Spectrespecs template
  • 1 sheet cardstock
  • Plastic wrap in two colors

Instructions

  1. Print and Cut Out the Spectrespec Template

Download the spectrespec template, and open the file on your computer. Adjust the size in your print preview window, so your printout will fit the wearer. You might want to print a test template on scrap paper to be sure.

Once you have determined the correct size, load your printer with cardstock and print out your template. You can use any color cardstock you like, but silver can give the spectrespecs an authentic look.

Next, cut out the template. If you want to decorate the right side of the spectrespecs, this is the time to do so.

  2. Make the Lenses

Take your two chosen colors of plastic wrap (blue and pink or purple and pink pair well), and cut one 2 1/2-inch diameter circle from each color. Don't worry about making the edges of your circle perfect. The rough edge will be glued to the wrong side of each lens hole to hide it.

  3. Glue the Lenses in Place

Place the frame of your spectrespecs right side down on a flat surface. Dab glue or rubber cement around the edges of the lens holes. Then, carefully press your plastic wrap circles in place to cover the lens holes.

  4. Attach the Earpieces

Place a heavy object, such as a book, on top of the spectrespecs. This will help to adhere the plastic wrap lenses and keep the spectrespecs in place while you put on the earpieces. Fold the tab on each earpiece along the dotted line. Put glue or rubber cement on the wrong side of the fold, and glue each earpiece in place onto the wrong side of the spectrespecs.

  5. Fine-Tune the Fit

Let the glue dry. Then, place the spectrespecs on the face of the wearer. Adjust the fold on either side of the lenses to make sure the glasses sit straight on their face. Trim the earpieces, so each end curves around their ears. Then, ask them to shake their head while looking down to make sure the fit is just right. If the spectrespecs fall off, cut more of a curve into the earpieces so they stay put.
