The Makeup:
Na'Vi makeup has been emulated in a multitude of YouTube videos, and I think that makeup tutorials work best when you can see it happening right in front of you. Here is my favorite Na'vi makeup video to help you on your way. I suggest using light makeup like Ben Nye or Snazaroo face makeup for solid blue layer.
The Hair:
The Na'vi hair is long, dark and adorned with braids. For those with long, dark hair, straighten with a flat iron and add a leave-in conditioner for extra shine. For the rest of us, you can buy a pre-braided wig (see wig), or find a long wig, like a Morticia Addams style (see wig), and simply braid small sections yourself. Stack a few dark blue, brown and black beads on a few of the strands and tie the hair in a knot to keep them on.
The Top:
Or, really, lack thereof. Na'vi are not particularly known for modesty. For a modest Neytiri top, you can use a blue or tan colored bikini top. Male Na'vi don't wear tops at all, really.
The Loincloth:
Male and female Na'vi wear loincloths, which are easy to make using a dark fabric. Leather looks great as a loincloth, but you can use long, dark fabric, too. First, cut a strip of leather long enough to tie around your waist. You can use a belt for this part if you are in a pinch.
Decide how long you want your loincloth. Cut a piece of fabric twice this length, and wide enough to cover your crotch/bum. Fold the fabric over the belt or leather strip. Stitch the fabric together just under the belt so that it stays on. You will need two of these, one for your front and one for your back. Please. Also, if you are feeling modest, you can wear a pair of light blue leggings underneath the loincloth.
The Shoes:
In the interest of not hurting your feet, wear a pair of light colored leather thongs or simple, strappy sandals.
Accessories and Jewelry:
The accessories can make all the difference. Without them, you will look like a lost member of The Blue Man Group or an overgrown Smurf. Fortunately, they can also be made for cheap.
- Make a hemp necklace, add wooden beads.
- Grab a bow & arrow set from the toy aisle at a local department store
- Make a necklace out of feathers, or create large symbol pendants out of polymer clay
- Braid leather strips to make anklets and bracelets
