The common ingredients to make fake blood come in very handy when you're feeling ghoulish or need a finishing touch on a costume. There are plenty of easy recipes for fake blood but the consistency and color can vary depending on the ingredients you mix. Here are nine recipes for fake blood to make from scratch so you can successfully gross out your friends.

Warning

All of the recipes except for the last one use red food coloring. Red food coloring leaves stains, so don't use this fake blood on anything that you want to get clean later on.

One of the simplest fake blood recipes is water-based, making it great for filling up a spray bottle and using it to hose down a zombie costume, your face for makeup, or the walls of a haunted house.

    Mix Together

    • 1/4 cup water
    • 4 drops of red food coloring

This dark red blood has a thin consistency so that it can be spattered easily and will look like old blood on clothing. To spatter blood, dip a paintbrush into the mixture, then tap the paintbrush over the area where you want a spray of blood.

    Mix Together

    • 1/4 cup water
    • 8 drops of red food coloring
    • 4 tablespoons corn syrup
    • 2 drops yellow food coloring
    • 1 drop green food coloring

For a realistic look, the blood needs to have more color than pure red. A corn syrup base gives this recipe a good thickness, but it is also sticky.

    Mix Together

    • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
    • 4 drops of red food coloring
    • 1 teaspoon cocoa mix

Cornstarch is a magical thing. Here, you'll use it to make a rubbery flesh to add to your gross-out blood recipes. It is also a finicky medium, so follow the mixing instructions to get a good consistency.

    You Will Need

    • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
    • 4 teaspoon water
    • 2 drops red food coloring
    • 1/4 teaspoon cocoa mix

    Instructions

    1. Add all of the cornstarch to the bowl.
    2. Add only 2 teaspoons of water and stir.
    3. Add 2 drops of food coloring and stir.
    4. Add 2 more teaspoons of water and another drop of food coloring and stir.
    5. Add 1/4 teaspoons of water. Stir until you have a good, rubbery texture.
    6. Add cocoa as the last ingredient.
    7. Press the mixture against the side of the bowl to blend.

Thin blood doesn't look too good when you want a dripping wall or drips down your face. Use this thick blood recipe to make a slow flow of gore.

    Mix Together

    • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
    • 2 drops red food coloring
    • 1/4 teaspoon cocoa mix

    Tip

If you don't have corn syrup, try substituting honey to make goopy fake blood. The honey will make the "blood" more thick and sticky.

    Fake Scabs

These are so gross, your mom won't even mind if you pick at them. The extra onion flakes in this recipe make for a super-gross scab action.

    Mix Together

    • 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
    • 1 teaspoon water
    • 1/4 teaspoon corn syrup
    • 3/4 teaspoon onion flakes (1 teaspoon corn flakes or bran flakes will work, too)
    • 1 drop red food coloring
    • 1 drop yellow food coloring

Clump the mixture onto your skin, keeping in mind that the red food coloring will leave a light stain after the scab is removed. As the scab dries, it will look darker and the clumps will become more prominent.

    Fake Guts

This chunky substance can be used to gross out your Halloween party guests. Put it in bowls on the table or drip it onto your unsuspecting store-bought severed heads and such.

    1. To make this gore, just whip up a batch of our Gross Blood recipe.
    2. Make a hunk of Fake Flesh. Make twice as much Fake Flesh as Gross Blood.
    3. Drop bits of fake flesh in the blood.
    4. If you have more blood than flesh, you will end up with prop blood that has a marbled pink hue to it and freezes mid-flow.

Plenty of red juices and other food items can substitute for red food coloring in a convincing recipe for fake blood. Here are some ideas for vampire and other costumes:

    • Beet or pomegranate juice
    • Red Kool-Aid or fruit punch
    • Cherry or strawberry gelatin powder
    • Tomato paste
    • Ketchup
    • White flour
    • Pancake syrup
    • Strawberry and chocolate syrup
    • Red velvet cake mix

    • Thick, dark blood: Combine corn syrup, any of the above ingredients, and a pinch of cocoa powder or a drop of chocolate syrup to darken the blood.
    • Bright red blood: Mix 1 part fruit punch with 2 parts corn syrup to mimic fresh, bright red blood.
    • Chunky blood: Blend red velvet cake mix and 4 cups of water for disgustingly chunky blood.
    • Darkish blood: Mix 1/2 cup ketchup and 1/2 cup of pancake syrup then add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to darken the blood.
    • Realistic blood: Blend ketchup, water, white flour, and a drop of chocolate syrup until you have the preferred color and consistency.
