I am honored to be chosen. Thanks for the contest. My website is actually http://www.szarkas.com. The link goes to my blog.

(2) Eta says:

I was a little confused when I noticed that different storefronts (of the same items) for the same crafter are listed under both Original Clothing Design and Geek Craft: Long Stocking Shop & Poppy’s Wicked Garden. (Additionally, it looks like Etsy closed down the first shop due to violation of ToS.)

(3) diyfashion says:

Thanks for the heads-up, Eta. I didn’t notice this, so I think that the shop closing is a recent development? I can’t speak for Etsy or the situation that occurred, so I went ahead and linked to the Facebook address listed on the shop front.

(4) Wendy says:

i’m thrilled to be included – thank you to all who dominated me to be included :)

(5) Cindy says:

Eta – Not sure that it matter who is running if they are loved and nominated. And how would anyone know why an Etsy shop is closed unless they work for Etsy. Hmmm. There are lots of reasons that a shop can be closed besides violation of TOS. Kind of rude to assume and trash the competition.

(6) Marie-Hélène Larocque says:

I want to comment on what Eta said : Poppy’s wicked Garden includes very different items is different styles. I assume that’s why she was chosen in 2 categories. One is more geeky and the other is more “normal” hence the 2 different shops she uses… She is crafty beyond belief and deserves the 2 nominations. Also, May I ask why you would think that she got her shop closed because she didn’t follow Etsy’s TOS? I buy the majority of my clothes from her and I’ve ALWAYS been satisfied! I’ve never felt once she was abusing anything on etsy or in regards to anybody… I think she is generous and imaginative and nice. Dunno why anyone, including etsy would have anything against her…
Congrats Poppy on the 2 nominations!!!

(7) Marie-Hélène Larocque says:

well said Cindy!

February 17, 2011 at 9:41 am
(8) Karyl says:

I agree with Marie’s comment above…..there is a different vibe to the shops that poppy has. So who cares if she was nominated for 2 different catagories. Doesn’t that happen at awards ceremonies for celebrities??? Why would this be any different? You are wrong about the reason for the closing of the shop…..so make sure you get your information right before posting something online for everyone to see…only making YOURSELF look kind of foolish for the assumption!

(9) Debbie (Wuglyees) says:

I am so honored to be a finalist here!! Thank you so much! I don’t knew who nominated me, but whoever it was, I want them to know that just that vote of confidence was enough to make me already feel like a winner! :-)

February 17, 2011 at 5:44 pm
(10) Joan says:

WOW. Considering the difference in sizes of the online handmade marketplaces, Zibbet is really kicking some butt.

Etsy = hypocrisy

I’ll take a pass, thank you.

(12) Bonnie says:

So where on this page can I find the list of nominated people and where do I vote?

Every time I think I’ve found a place that will get me there, I come back to this page and for this computer geek – cannot find it. eg: http://bit.ly/g2RpKa that gets me back to thnis page!

Thanks for your help.

Live well and keep crafting!

(14) Susan says:

I love Wool Mountain Studio’s work but it is all crochet- she even says it on her site, not knitting so why is she listed in knitting
(knitter and crocheter here and they are very different)

February 20, 2011 at 9:50 am
(15) Kristin says:

Re: Susan, actually, her site says “Freeform Crochet (and knitted items too!)” so Wool Mountain Studio certainly could be in the knitting category.

(16) Marisol says:

Who chose these nominees? There are some really wonderful artisans not being represented here. How do we add them?

February 24, 2011 at 2:21 pm
(17) diyfashion says:

Hi Marisol,

We had a nomination process in January/February when readers were asked to nominate their favorites in each category. Up to 5 finalists were chosen in each category, according to the number of nominations they received. If you have an artisan to suggest for a feature blog post, I’d love to hear about them!

February 24, 2011 at 12:09 pm
(18) Alison says:

@Eta where does it state that this shop got closed down because of a ToS violation? Do you work for Etsy and can verify that this is the case? Also, if you did work for Etsy and are verifying that this shop got shut down for a ToS violation, you obviously would be out of a job right now, simply because of policies that state that Etsy employees are not allowed to talk about private matters regarding a shop closing for whatever reason.

I implore you to get your facts straight and keep any heresay comments to yourself, because if you are a competing shop with this one, you’re showing a very unprofessional side to yourself that will affect your customers & potential sales. Please review what you post before posting it.

Thank you.

February 24, 2011 at 6:59 pm
(19) Talleh says:

@Eta (& others?)
Don’t analyze it so much. It looks like you were trying to do too much research, but no one else here who already voted bothered to do that I’m sure. (There is actually another artist who was nominated in 2 categories, too. I assume that was all right for this poll.)

This is seriously just a popularity contest for those that happened to find this page. This is not a unbiased judging panel of experts taking into account how much creativity/originality/work/craftsmanship goes into each item via a set grading scale. Nor does it figure in how nicely the items are presented in photos or text. Nor does it look into the target markets and the demand. Nor does it look into customer service and professionalism.

Really, I think a better indication of how successful a shop is would be how many sales they’ve had, their feedback from buyers, hearts their items/shop have, how often they appear in different treasuries/blogs/tweets/etc, how many fans they have on Facebook (especially active fans that consistently have conversations with them) and other much more visible and searchable representations.

But this here…this is just another random poll of random opinions out there on the internet. It’s fun and silly and ultimately doesn’t mean much of an award if the winning shop still doesn’t sell enough to stay in business in the end.

So, stop thinking about it. Vote for whoever you want to, whatever items speak to you best, for whatever biased criteria you do have – you don’t have to be “fair” about this. You can come back everyday and whiteknight the same person or randomly come and vote for someone different everyday. Or don’t vote at all. But don’t get stressed out about it.

Us Zibbet people may be small in number but we are very friendly and each of us enthusiastic zibbet shopkeepers who are active in the community are active in several communities.

Many of us individual shopkeepers have hundreds of followers to our own names. We get around globally. Especially those among us who are pimping the the facte that zibbet is a finalist.

And we really believe in the epic freedom and support that zibbet packs.

Plus we deeply believe in things like honor and integrity. Those of us active in the community and outside the zibbet circles are pretty good humored too.

Trust me when I say we are going places. Zibbet really gives us the freedom and tools to shine and it shows in the way we talk to people.

Peace out awesome peoples ;)

Artfire just received over 3600 votes in a matter of hours. That’s 25% of their total votes in less than a day. Though it seems like every time Folksy’s votes surge, so do theirs.

Didn’t this happen once before?

February 28, 2011 at 11:06 pm
(23) Rain Blanken says:

This could be due to Artfire or Folksy keeping an eye on Facebook/Twitter for updates from the competing sites, and in turn, releasing their own updates.

Surges are also apparent when one of the sites releases an email newsletter to their thousands of subscribers.

(24) Sofismart says:

This is tough for me, as I have a shop at Artfire and another at Zibbet, I like both stores, but to me Zibbet is more friendlier, I get a lot of support, advice..no pressure to sign into the store everyday.. But as i said both stores have wonderful craft stores and a lot of gifty people.

(26) being_fair says:

I find it very sad when I receive an email from Zibbet asking me to “Please vote a couple of times a day”. Where is the point if everyone just votes a million times? It would just show that despite having a shop on Zibbet, I still have so much time to do a silly thing like that. Doesn’t say much about me being ‘busy’ selling on Zibbet.

(27) Sam. says:

I voted for Artfire & Zoraida! ^_^ It’s so cool watching how she makes her awesome creations!

March 8, 2011 at 11:30 am
(28) Pink says:

being_fair, you’re absolutely correct. However, Zibbet would have no chance of winning otherwise, because there are only about 3K sellers there and it’s unknown how many of those are active sellers. Obviously, the sellers there are quite dedicated to their venue because they have done nothing for weeks but wait for their downloaded timers to go off every 10 minutes so they can vote again. It shows their love of Zibbet and it may get Zibbet’s name out there.

Sorry to tell them, though, that Artfire is the best online venue out there! Number one in all they do!!!!

Go Artfire!!!!

How can anyone take this seriously when you can vote multiple times?

March 8, 2011 at 11:57 pm
(31) Marney says:

What is the point of this whole exercise? It is ridiculous when people are voting hundreds of times. It has nothing to do with the best of anything. It is not even a popularity contest. It shows nothing except what “sheeple” people have become.

March 9, 2011 at 1:11 am
(32) Jackson says:

The “pressure” to check in on Artfire is for your own benefit. At least you have the confidence of knowing when the last time the artist looked at their shop. I would rather buy from someone I see checks in every day. If a shop says “last checked in 2 months ago” there is no way I am going to buy from them, because I perceive they do not care about their shop. I also like that not checking in causes you to get put at the back of the line in searches. If you are not maintaining your shop, why should you get any benefit? You get out of Artfire what you put into Artfire.

March 9, 2011 at 1:22 am
(33) Sam says:

How do you make any vote for best marketplace a fair process when you put up a huge site like Artfire with over 74,000 sellers against small sites like Zibbet, iCraft and Folksy?

Artfire should have kicked MEGA butt by their sheer numbers alone. That they didn’t says VOLUMES to me.

March 9, 2011 at 2:05 am
(34) VaL says:

In all honesty, If ArtFire had known that it was possible to vote almost continuously as stated above, the outcome would have been very different. We were actually wondering why another sites numbers were going up so fast with their small following.

We have nothing against Zibbet, nice site, friendly people. It all depends on where your loyalty lies. When ArtFire Artisans found out what was going on, we dug in our heels and the rest is history. This speaks VOLUMES to me.

March 9, 2011 at 7:47 am
(35) Crystalpearl says:

I agree with Val. Most of us at Artfire thought we had to vote just once a day. It wasn’t until someone mentioned that Zibbet were voting multiple times a day that the penny dropped as to why a smaller venue was managing to out vote us. That being said, there is huge respect being demonstrated for Zibbet in the Atfire forum and we see ourselves more as equals than opponents. The fact that both venues have trounced what was once perceived to be THE most popular venue, really does speak volumes. Good luck to Artfire members and Zibbet members in equal measure. Just imagine what we could do if both sites joined forces. World domination – LOL!

I first read about the multiple voting on the Artfire forums long before it was mentioned in the Zibbet forums.

The continuous voting is a myth. People think that because they vote and the count goes up, it must have been their vote. Not… it was someone else’s vote.

Try it at 4:00 in the morning – it didn’t work.

And yes, a site of over 74,000 sellers beat out a site with 3,500 sellers.

Congratulations… What a coupe!

I have shops on Etsy, Zibbet, and ArtFire.

I really like ArtFire and Zibbet. I haven’t had time to put the same effort into my Zibbet shop as I do my AF shop, but I hope to fill it up so I can start promoting it over the next few weeks. It’s a lovely site that is always growing and improving. I’ve been with AF since their beginning and have enjoyed growing with them, and I am VERY happy there.

Etsy sucks.

Seriously, this poll isn’t a poll. It turned into a clicking contest, nothing more. A legitimate poll would have allowed one vote per person, or per computer, period. Not one a day, and certainly not dozens of times a day.

I’m actually not convinced that more than one vote per computer, per day, was counted. I tried it and it never worked for me, so I don’t think it was actually working for anyone. I find it rather sad that so many people from Zibbet and ArtFire put their lives on hold for two weeks just to click the button every ten minutes. It reminded me of LOST.

After I learned that we could vote every day, I did. Not always for AF or Zibbet. Sometimes I voted for Folksy or icraft. I never voted for Etsy.

As for how much new traffic this poll will bring to any of the sites, I wonder. Since it was the same people/sellers voting over and over, I don’t see how that introduced us to new shoppers.

And since the poll seems to be so flawed, I would hesitate to claim any bragging rights, regardless of who won.

Sorry About.com, but unless you can show us that multiple votes from the same computers, on the same day, were NOT counted, I’m not going to be bragging about the results of this poll, or blogging, tweeting, or facebooking about it.

Perhaps About.com will elliminate all the mulitple votes made to one per IP. That would be the right way to go about it, in my opinion.

We shall see.

(42) VaL says:

I have read your comments in the Zibbet forums. You really seem to have a bad attitude regarding ArtFire. You can say what you wish…we at ArtFire did not know about the multiple voting.

I don’t know why you are bashing ArtFire…all I can say is, Relax, stress is not good for you. :D

March 16, 2011 at 7:28 pm
(43) Christina says:

Actually a large part of why zibbet did so well was because many of us encouraged outsiders to come in and vote.

I myself only voted about 5-7 times. Since more than that seemed pointless. Had I not been really sick for the last week & a half I would have been able to help the zibbet out more in the end. Since as newer venue they could have used it more. And cuz well I’m not going to lie, it is my favorite amongst handmade venues.
