One thing about this event is that it is about so much more than sci-fi. As the 'Multiple Alternate Realities Convention', it is really about celebrating everything fictional. There were panels that varied from what to do in case of a zombie attack to Oriental dance workshops. I attended a late-night party thrown by Ghostbusters and learned how to curse in Klingon. Only at MARCon.
I also met so many people in fantastic costumes who were more than happy to pose. Some of the get-ups were so real that I was a little scared to approach them, like the 8 foot tall rasping Darth Vader.
The costuming culture at conventions is a hardcore DIY atmosphere. Store-bought costumes that look spot-on are not as appreciated as those that have flaws, but were handcrafted by the wearer. The Saturday night Masquerade is a good place to catch all the costumes on parade, and prizes are given out to the most crafty of disguises. This year, an impressive homemade dinosaur stole the show.
Here are my 2009 MARCon photos of fabulous costumes:

Wasn’t Marcon fun? Was my first year too. Really enjoyed seeing all the different costumes. Was nice meeting you. I was one of the Jedi.
Hi Jon! Yes, Marcon was loads of fun, I think I’m already hooked for next year. There were so many great panels and people were incredibly friendly. Hope I got your good side! Have a great day!

Going to show/conventions are always fun. Not only do you get to see what’s hot but what will sell. I own a costumes store and this is the only way to stay ahead of the game.
WonderCon 2009 is also very cool.
